Napoleon III Marble Ormolu Mounted Inkwell
Ferdinand Barbedienne created this rouge marble inkwell in Paris during the 19th century. The base has a trio of ormolu supports and the inkwell is balanced on top of the backs of two mythical beasts from Chinese culture, the dragon turtle. There are two tortoise on top of the lid, and underneath is a cobalt blue glass well. Napoleon trois or second empire style favored rich colored marbles and ornate detailing, often with a nod to the east. Five inches in height and seven inches in width.
