Schifano was a leading figure in Italian Post-Modern art. He was connected to the Arte Povera movement in Italy, as well as pop-art globally. He was friends with Warhol, drove a Rolls Royce around Rome, hung out with the Rolling Stones and dated Anita Pallenberg.
