Jack Savitsky Small Abstract Painting
Jack Savitsky (American 1910-1991) is considered one of America's great self-taught artists. He lived in Pennsylvania and left school in the sixth grade to begin working in the coal mines with his father. He devoted much of his time to making art and developed a style that is easily recognizable.
This small oil painting is unusual for Savitsky. The organic abstract nature of this painting is a departure from his ordered and precise way of working. The profile of a woman and two tree trunks are highlighted in black. The woman's hair blends with the woodland surroundings, suggesting perhaps she is mother nature. The painting is 4" by 6".
His work is in the collections of several major museums including The Smithsonian, Museum of American Folk Art, and The National Museum of American Art.
