Giltwood Frame with Four Grand Tour Impront.
Impronte, or intaglios, were made by skilled gem carvers and sold in sets to wealthy travelers from America and elsewhere, while in Italy on their European Grand Tours.
Impronte are typically made of plaster, some like these are a sulphur and ash or lava combination. Pompeii was a destination of great interest and souvenirs such as these were very popular.
The special papers with gilt details each have a number which would have corresponded to a list of titles for each impronte.
This set of four are mounted on Italian marbled paper in a small oval giltwood frame.
